A student tutor ?

One question that might be asked of HomeTeach would be: “How effective is a student tutor compared with a conventional tutor? Is it really cost effective?”

Academic
Students will only tutor subjects at levels at which they feel comfortable. The UK has one of the top university systems in the world and students there are more than capable of tutoring their degree subject up to A Level. Moreover, most students attaining a place a UK universities obtain very high grades at A Level and GCSE, mainly A’s and A*’s, and so they can be comfortable providing a broad range of tutoring, beyond their major degree subject.

Emotional
We feel that there will be a greater compatibility between a HomeTeacher and a tutee, than is generally achieved with a conventional tutor. This is because between the university student and school student there is automatically a common ground that would not exist between an older tutor and a child. Most school children, given the choice, would opt for a younger tutor, since they are able to relate more easily to one another’s experiences, both academic and personal.
We hope that our HomeTeachers will provide far more than just academic help to their tutees. We hope that, due to age proximity, an emotional bond will form between the HomeTeacher and his/her pupil, and that a mentor relationship can develop. Our aim is for children to be taught not only about their subject, but also about aspiring, and thinking big. Ultimately we hope that all of our HomeTeach tutees will go on to attain a place at a top university like that of their tutor, and we feel that this relationship can be a major step in the process.

Psychological
Due to the age proximity, a HomeTeacher can identify with a student who is finding it hard to understand a problem or concept, and thereby have a greater understanding of precisely what the child is having difficulty with. This empathy makes it easier for the HomeTeacher to communicate the relevant facts effectively, and guide the child to understanding.
A HomeTeacher will also also be able to understand perfectly the stresses of tests and exams that the tutee has to undertake, since the HomeTeacher has been through the same process only recently, and is familiar with the system as well as the experience.
